They plan to perform the following climate change services:

* reanalysis of of climate data as a continuous, ongoing operation,
* information targets (Essential Climate Variables or ECVs) from atmospheric, marine and terrestrial sources
* adding in support socio-economic modelers
* filling in the observational gaps, with data from elsewhere, such as GCOS (Global Climate Observing System)

It is currently running in pre-operational demonstration, with R&D projects starting next year. It will also be responding to the Framework 7 (FP7) space call. Further in the future, in 2009-2010 the European Union will pass a legal act making Kopernikus an operational EU programme.

In the period 2011-2014, the first Kopernikus satellites (the Sentinels) will be launched, and the services will be sustained for long-term operation service.

After that presentation, Alan O'Neill put a number of questions to different members of the panel:

The sentinels are five satellite constellations being planned by Kopernikus, which will be launched from 2012 onwards. The first will have synthetic aperture radar imaging system with 20m resolution. The EU are ahead of the game in this technology, having used such technology to make measurements showing the outflow of greenland glaciers increase, and the break up of Arctic sea-ice.

Mikael Rattenborg from EUMETSAT stated that they were committed to supporting Kopernikus through provision of data and data products. They have some

30 years of satellite data, being reprocessed, harmonised, and providing continuity to the long-term monitoring being planned. He spoke about the Metop satellite, a polar orbiter with three important instruments:

*GOMe-2 (global ozone monitoring experiment)
