International Programme Committee (IPC)

The IAF International Programme Committee (IPC) meets during the IAF Spring Meetings held in March in Paris, and selects the papers to be presented at the annual International Astronautical Congress. Papers are submitted by their authors in the weeks running up to the Spring Meetings.

IPC members are designated by the IAF Technical Committee Chairs, by members of the IAA Commissions and by members of the IISL Board, and are nominated one year before a Congress. The Committee is supervised by two Co-Chairs, nominated by the IAF Bureau and appointed by the IAF General Assembly. Traditionally, one Co-Chair from the yearly host and another – from the host of the upcoming Congress. In this way, the Co-Chair from the future IAC hosting city learns his/her role from the current host representative. The IPC is responsible for implementing the technical programme of the forthcoming Congress. It proposes subjects for its scientific and technical sessions and names the Symposium coordinators, session chairs and rapporteurs. Alongside the selection of papers, it also assures, in cooperation with the Congress host and the IAF Secretariat, the proper organisation and conduct of the sessions. Additionally, the IPC is supported by an IPC Steering Group that assists its Co-Chairs in resolving issues and helps develop and render more effective and helpful the IAC technical programme. The IPC Steering Committee is involved in the definition of a solid and attractive set of Plenary Events and Highlight Lectures. It coordinates symposia and technical sessions within and across categories, managing the priorities, clarification and effectiveness of the IAC, and works closely with symposium coordinators to support them. It may also recommend modifications to the IAC’s scientific categorisation itself. Representation of each sponsoring organisation (IAF, IAA and IISL) is another function of the Steering Group. The Group also provides effective coordination to assure appropriate and timely support from each of the three organisations. The Steering Group consists of one member from each of the sponsoring organisations and several additional IPC members. These last are selected by the IPC Co-Chairs upon recommendation either from the three organisations or from IPC members. The member list is approved by the IAF Bureau before members’ formal appointment.
