Alvin D. Harvey

Dr. Harvey is a citizen of the Navajo Nation (Diné) whose clans are Tó baazhni’ázhi (Two-Who-Came-To-Water), Honágháahnii (One-Walks-Around), Dághaałchííʼ(Irish-Decent) and Kiyaa’áanii (Towering-House). He is a current Postdoctoral Fellow in the Space Enabled Research Group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab. His research focuses on the centering of Indigenous Knowledge Systems in space engineering, science, and innovation to further Earth and space ecological healing and resilience. This transdisciplinary approach spans from Indigenous philosophy to Traditional Ecological Knowledge application in the fields of systems engineering, bioastronautics, astrobiology, and remote sensing.

Dr. Harvey has a background in systems engineering, bioastronautics, Earth science applications, culturally-relevant education and outreach, and Indigenous design. He holds a PhD and SM from MIT in Aeronautics and Astronautic and is an invited visiting scholar at the Salish Kootenai College Indigenous Research Center. Dr. Harvey’s experience as a volunteer EMT, private pilot, and community advocate informs a broader approach to understanding and healing complex socioecological systems.
