Christer Fuglesang

KTH Space Center • Director, Former Astronaut

Christer Fuglesang is an astronaut and professor at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, where he also serves as Director of the KTH Space Center since 2014. In addition, he works part-time as a Space Advisor to Saab. He holds a PhD in experimental particle physics from Stockholm University and has previously worked at CERN and the European Space Agency (ESA).

Fuglesang flew on two Space Shuttle missions to the International Space Station (ISS), during which he performed five spacewalks (EVAs). His research has focused on cosmic rays and energetic particles in space, and more recently on the feasibility of deploying space-based sunshades to mitigate global warming. He is also involved in the DISCOWERY project, which develops secure multi-agent robotic systems. At KTH, he teaches a course on Human Spaceflight.

He is a member of the Royal Swedish Academies of Sciences, Engineering Sciences, and War Sciences. He chairs the boards of the Swedish National Museum of Science and Technology and the Göran Gustafsson Foundation for Research in Natural Sciences and Medicine. Fuglesang has also authored several children’s books.
