Dr. Gnyawali’s current research seeks to understand how firms compete and create competitive advantage through business strategy. The overarching research questions he has investigated are how firms acquire external resources possessed by their strategic alliance partners, how they develop internal resources such as technology and shared knowledge, and how they leverage external and internal resources to become better competitors and to create competitive advantages. Another important area of his research examines why and how firms simultaneously compete and collaborate with each other (or engage in co-opetition) and what the implications are of such co-opetition. One of his published papers urges small and medium enterprises to consider co-opetition as a strategy so that they can collectively develop their ability to compete against large firms. His research has been published in premier business journals and has won awards from national and international conferences and journals.

Dr. Gnyawali’s teaching and consulting expertise are in the areas of strategic management, entrepreneurship, management of technology and innovation, and international management.
