Frédéric BRETAR

Space for Climate Observatory (SCO) • Co-Programme Director

Frédéric BRETAR is the Head of the Space for Climate Observatory (SCO) at CNES, a One Planet Summit international initiative that brings together 55 space agencies, research institutes, private companies, international organizations and federates more than hundred projects.

Frédéric BRETAR is Ingénieur en Chef des Ponts, Eaux et Forêts, and an engineer-geograph. He holds a PhD in Image and signal processing from Telecom ParisTech, a Master degree in public policies from Ecole des Ponts ParisTech, and a Habilitation to supervise Research from Paris 7 university.

As a scientist in computer vision, Frédéric BRETAR is a specialist in algorithms and 3D geo-data. During the course of his academic career he has been a researcher at the National Institute of Geographic and Forest Information (IGN). He headed the Earth Sciences laboratory of the Centre for Studies and Expertise on Risks, Environment, Mobility and Urban Planning (CEREMA) in Rouen. He was then appointed as a diplomat from 2012 to 2019 in China (Shanghai and Hong Kong) where he led the France-China scientific cooperation and organized several high level diplomatic events. Frédéric BRETAR embodies essential values throughout his professional and personal journey. As a manager, he adopts a visionary perspective, inspiring and guiding his teams. His openness to national and international cooperation reflects a deep conviction that global challenges are best addressed through collective efforts. He is proud to contribute to addressing the climate crisis, recognizing the urgent need for sustainable and impactful solutions.
