Iwao Igarashi is Vice President & General Manager, Business Development, Space Systems, Integrated Defense & Space Systems at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI). He has the responsibilities for the business development in the all-around space products and services in MHI, including product for deep space or lunar surface and vehicles’ development, manufacturing, and operation related to human apace activity. Since he joined MHI in 1992, he participated in various space system developments as engineer, such as H-IIA launch vehicle and its 1st stage propulsion system. He also experienced assistant launch conductor and played important role to originating MHI’s launch service business, which was transferred from JAXA. Before the present position, he led the launch activities of H-IIA and H-IIB, and development of Japanese new flagship launch vehicle H3 as deputy director of the engineering department. MHI has been contributing in providing technologies and expertise from MHI’s years of experience with the International Space Station (ISS) program, such as Japanese Environment Module (JEM), Cell Biology Experimental Facility (CBEF) and H-II Transfer Vehicel (HTV). Currently MHI is developing HTV-X under JAXA contract for human activities in LEO.
