Maria Fabrizia Buongiorno

National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) • Director of Technological Research

Maria Fabrizia Buongiorno, Graduated in Geology at University of Rome "La Sapienza" in 1988. She has more than 30 years of experience in the sector of EO missions and data processing for environment and natural hazards applications. She is Director of Technological Research at Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) since 2003. She coordinated the INGV Remote Sensing Activities at national level from 2004. In 2017 she has been nominated by the Italian Government deputy representative for INGV at the National Operative Committee for the Civil Protection. Actually She coordinates the INGV Centre for Space Observations of Earth (COS) established in 2020. In June 2021, she has been appointed by the Italian Space Agency President, President of E-GEOS Company (Telespazio/ASI). Her research interests include volcanology and environmental application by means of spectral analysis of VIS-IR images data acquired by airborne, spaceborne instruments and in situ data. Since the very rapid evolution of new image sensors for airborne and spaceborne platforms, in the last 2 decades she worked in close cooperation with aerospace industries in order to propose new EO mission concepts which may improve the understanding of Earth Processes and Climate Change. She is actually co-PI in the NASA-ASI mission SBG-TIR (Surface Biology and Geology, TIR element), and member of other Advisory Boards for European space missions with Optical payloads for Earth Observations (ESA-LSTM, ASI-PRISMA, DLR-EnMAP). Since 2013 She is co-chair with USGS of the Earth Science Working Group in the frame of the USA-ITALY bilateral agreement in Science and Technology and coordinates the activities in the MAECI-INGV MoU. She is author of many papers and publications in the above mentioned fields.
