Matthew Gilliham

University of AdelaideDirector, ARC Centre of Excellence in Plants for Space

Prof Matthew Gilliham is Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Plants for Space (P4S), a >$AU100M initiative to develop technologies that allow humans to survive and thrive remote from Earth, as part of the Artemis moon-to-mars program, and to improve sustainable production of nutrition and bioresources on Earth. With over 30 national and international partners, multidisciplinary skillsets in Plant and Food Science, Systems and Process Engineering, Nutrition, Psychology, Law, and Education have been combined to explore the fundamental breakthroughs required to deliver plant biofactories and bioprocessing technologies to sustain closed environments for extra-terrestrial settlement. Importantly, these advances will also be translated as new, more sustainable options for on-Earth biomanufacturing of high-value products like pharmaceuticals, plastics and plant-based foods. Matthew’s background is in Plant Physiology, having made breakthroughs in crop stress tolerance that have been translated for yield improvements, and in academic leadership having previously led the Waite Research Institute, the University of Adelaide’s flagship for Agricultural Innovation. Matthew has been a Clarivate/Web of Science Highly Cited Author since 2019. He gained a BSc in Ecology from Lancaster University and a PhD in Plant Physiology from the University of Cambridge, UK.
