Mayumi Matsuura

Mayumi Matsuura was appointed as Vice President and Director-General of Human Spaceflight Technology Directorate of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), in April 2024. She also oversees the Space Exploration Innovation Hub Center, a center that carries out innovative projects with space and non-space commercial industry, and the JAXA Space Exploration Center (JSEC), in charge of the Artemis Program and other exploration missions. Previously she was Director for Human Spaceflight Technology Center. In 2016 she became the first Space Situation Awareness (SSA) Project Manager of the JAXA Space Tracking and Communications Center, when the JAXA SSA System project was established. In 1998 Ms. Matsuura joined the Space Environment Utilization Promotion Department (now the Human Space Technology Division), where she worked as flight director for the Japanese Kibo Module on the ISS and the HTV. From 1992 she worked in the Range Operations Section of the Launch Control Department. She joined the National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA, now part of JAXA) in 1986, initially working in the Tracking and Control Center.
