Najam Abbas Naqvi

National Center of GIS and Space Applications (NCGSA) • Chairman and Central Project Director

Prof. Dr. Najam Abbas Naqvi has over 24 years of extensive experience in academia, research, and project management in the fields of space science, technology, and their applications. Currently, he serves as the Chairman and Central Project Director of the National Center of GIS and Space Applications (NCGSA), a key initiative by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and the Government of Pakistan. In this capacity, he manages the center’s financial, administrative, research, human resources, and strategic operations.

The NCGSA is a consortium of seven research labs across various higher education institutions in Pakistan, contributing to a wide range of domains including Geo Forensics, Geo Health, Geo Hazards, Mineral Inventory, Theoretical and Observational Astronomy & Astrophysics, GNSS Research and Applications, Small Satellite Development, Space Education and Outreach, Remote Sensing for Agriculture, GIS applications in geology, water and forest resource management, climate and environment, and urban planning.

Dr. Naqvi is a full professor in the Department of Space Science at the Institute of Space Technology (IST), Islamabad, Pakistan, and previously served as Head of the Department of Space Science from 2020 to 2023. As the founding head of the Master’s Program in Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) at IST, he has played a pivotal role in advancing GNSS education in the country. He is also a member of the Belt and Road Aerospace Innovation Alliance (BRAIA), China, and has authored numerous research papers presented at international conferences and published in top-tier journals. For the past 15 years, he has been an active advocate for space education, awareness, and outreach, and has supervised over 20 postgraduate theses in the GNSS field.

Dr. Naqvi holds a Doctorate of Engineering in Guidance, Navigation, and Control, specializing in GNSS, from the Space Academy, College of Astronautics at Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU), Xi’an, China. He also earned a specialized MS in GNSS and its Applications from Politecnico di Torino, Italy. His research interests span Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), Geospatial Technologies, Spacecraft Attitude and Orbit Determination & Control, and Project Management.
