Nicolas PETER

European Space Agency (ESA)Exploration Strategy Officer

Nicolas Peter works at the European Space Agency (ESA) in the Director General’s Cabinet as Exploration Strategy Officer. Prior to joining ESA, he has been a Research Fellow at the European Space Policy Institute, a Lockheed Martin Fellow at the George Washington University’s (GWU) Space Policy Institute and a Research Fellow at the X PRIZE Foundation. He has also been Teaching Associate for the International Space University’s (ISU) Master programme and Team Project Co-chair for the Summer Session Programme.

Over the years, Peter has become a respected expert in the field of space policy affairs. He has published over 100 reports, book chapters and articles in peer-reviewed journals, and presented at international conferences related to space activities. He has also co-edited three books on space affairs. He has been invited to be Chair and Rapporteur for sessions dealing with space policy issues at International Astronautical Congresses (IAC) held on four continents, giving him a good overview of the global space context and the role of international cooperation. He took part in numerous IAF working groups on a diverse range of space-related fields and, since 2008, has served as the Secretary of the Space Security Committee. He is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC).

Peter holds a Bachelor’s degree in Geography from the Louis Pasteur University in Strasbourg, France. He also has a first Master’s degree in Space Systems and a second one in Space Technology Applications, both from the Louis Pasteur University. He is also a graduate from the ISU’s Master in Space Studies programme and holds a Master of International Science and Technology Policy from the GWU’s Elliott School of International Affairs (Washington D.C, USA). He also attended Business Executive Education courses at ESSEC (France), HEC (France) and the Manchester Business School (UK).
