Painos Gweme

Zimbabwe National Geospatial and Space Agency (ZINGSA) • Director General

Mr. Painos Gweme is the Chief Operation Officer of the Zimbabwe National Geospatial and Space Agency (ZINGSA), a position he has held since 2018. ZINGSA is a state-owned institute under the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation Science and Technology Development and is responsible for promoting peaceful use of space.

Mr. Gweme has more than 20 years of experience in various managerial positions. He was educated at the University of Zimbabwe and graduated with a BSc Hons Degree in Geographic Information Science. In addition, he holds a Master of Technology Degree in Software Engineering from the Harare Institute of Technology.

Mr. Gweme is one of the founding members of ZINGSA, and since its establishment, he has made remarkable contributions towards the growth and development of the agency and the space sector in the Republic of Zimbabwe.

He superintended the design, manufacture, and launch of Zimbabwe’s first satellite ZIMSAT-1, the development of the National Wetland Master Plan, revision of Zimbabwe’s agroecological regions, capacity building, and establishing relationships of cooperation on regional and international scales. He also facilitated ZINGSA’s participation in space-related regional and international programmes and ensured that ZINGSA responds to national requirements through the provision of geospatial, space science, and earth observation data for national development.

Mr. Gweme is also a member of the board of the Zimbabwe Centre for High-Performance Computing.
