Patrick Neumann

Neumann Space • Founder, Chief Scientist & Head of R&D

A/Prof Patrick “Paddy” Neumann is an internationally-recognised expert in plasma physics and propulsion and an advocate for a sustainable use of Space and the development of an in-space circular propulsion ecosystem. Paddy established Neumann Space in 2015 after he laid the foundation for what became the Neumann Drive, an electric propulsion system for satellites and spacecraft using solid metal as propellant which gained flight heritage in the last 12 months.

Now Chief Scientist and Head of R&D for Neumann Space, Paddy’s work focusses on pulsed cathodic arc propulsion systems, which can use any solid, conductive material as propellant, including spacecraft structural metals. Since recognising this during his studies, one of his research area has been in-space assembly and manufacture processes, with a focus on recycling debris objects to enable circular industrial ecosystems, in parallel with his propulsion work, supported by a strong team of engineers and scientists. Bringing both aspects together, some of his recent work has focussed on the use of recycled structural alloys as propellant, collaborating with international partners to bring together all the required technologies to build an in-orbit circular propulsion ecosystem offering a new capability for commercial and defence satellites and therefore contributing to the sustainable use of Space.

Paddy holds degrees in physics and engineering, including a PhD in experimental plasma physics as it applies to spacecraft propulsion systems. He is an active senior member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and a member of the AIAA Electric Propulsion Technical Committee. In 2020, Paddy received the AIAA’s coveted Lawrence Sperry Award “for continued development of miniature electric spacecraft propulsion systems and ceaseless advocacy for the development of Australian space capabilities”. In 2022, Paddy was named Australian Scientist of the Year at the Australian Space Awards.
