European Space Agency (ESA)Strategy Team Leader

Stefaan is the Strategy Team Leader at the European Space Agency (ESA) in ESTEC, coordinating the strategy area for human and robotic exploration. He also represents ESA in the International Space Exploration Coordination Group (ISECG), which includes 28 Space Agencies. From 2022 to 2024, he served as Chair of ISECG. Previously, while on secondment from ESA, he was secretary general of Paris-based EURISY (2011-2016), an international association of space agencies with a mission to create networks between space and society. Stefaan has a broad experience in ESA exploration programmes, including integration management for ESA International Space Station payloads and various system engineering roles such as research instrumentation and facilities in microgravity, re-entry vehicle demonstrator and launcher services, and an Earth Observation system for high-altitude lightning. He began his career as a researcher in cardiovascular fluid dynamics and the non-invasive diagnosis of heart failure using ultrasound. Stefaan holds a PhD and a master's degree in biomedical engineering, a master's degree in civil engineering, and a bachelor's degree in law.
