European Space Agency (ESA)Senior Strategy Officer for Human and Robotic Exploration

Stefaan is senior strategy officer at the European Space Agency (ESA) in ESTEC, coordinating the strategy area for human and robotic exploration. In this role he is also representing ESA in the International Space Exploration Coordination Group where he is co-chair of the Exploration Roadmap Working Group. Previously, on a secondment from ESA, he was secretary general of Paris based EURISY (2011-2016), an international association of space agencies with a mission to create networks between space and society. Prior to this, Stefaan acquired broad experience in ESA exploration programmes. Providing the integration management function for the ESA International Space Station payloads. Various system engineering assignments for payloads and systems e.g. instrumentation for biomedical research in microgravity, re-entry vehicle demonstrator and launcher services, and an Earth Observation system for high altitude lightning. Stefaan started his career as a researcher in the field of cardiovascular fluid dynamics and the non-invasive diagnosis of heart failure using ultrasound. Stefaan holds a PhD and a master degree in biomedical engineering, a master degree in civil engineering, and a bachelor degree in law.
