Thomas Schervan

iBOSS gmbH • CEO

Thomas is the co-founder and CEO of iBOSS GmbH, founded in 2017 in Germany. The company mission is to promote modularity and enable ultimate plug-and-play of future space infrastructure and associated logistics, utilizing specialized interface and building block technologies.

He was appointed as Chief Engineer of the Institute of Structural Mechanics and Lightweight Design at RWTH Aachen University. He is a structural mechanics expert, specializing in spacecraft design and weight optimization through the application of genetic and machine learning algorithms. Thomas A. Schervan was born in 1979, is married, and has two children.

He completed his mechanical engineering studies with a focus on aerospace engineering at RWTH Aachen University (Germany) and Politecnico di Milano (Italy). During his studies, he gained significant work experience as a freelance software, database and web developer. Thomas earned a diploma in mechanical engineering from RWTH Aachen University, and subsequently worked there as a full-time research engineer at the Institute of Structural Mechanics and Lightweight Design.

For more than six years, Thomas was a member and ultimately the leader of a team of ten engineers at the Institute who developed modular satellite architectures under three major DLR grants for the iBOSS joint research project (2010-2018). During his tenure at the institute, Thomas developed extensive knowledge in structural mechanics, optimization utilizing genetic algorithms, thermal-mechanical analysis, thermal control of satellites, and space component qualification. He was later appointed a lectureship position, where he instructed courses on the design of shell structures, the structural design of spacecrafts, structural design and construction, and the basics of finite element analysis. Thomas is conducting a PhD research project centered on the development and application of deep learning neural networks to forecast the mechanical responses of lightweight structures.
