Yoji Ishikawa

Obayashi Corporation • General Manager

Dr. Yoji Ishikawa has made significant contributions to space engineering/science in the fields related to "space" and "life." He started his career as a postdoc studying astrobiology at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and NASA Ames Research Center in the US after receiving his PhD, MS, and BS (aerospace engineering) from The University of Tokyo. After he joined the Obayashi Corporation, one of the largest construction firms in Japan, Dr. Ishikawa actively worked on space-related research on Lunar and Mars bases, life support systems, space agriculture, and space elevator. His involvement in the space elevator started in 2012 when the Obayashi Corporation published its Space Elevator Construction Concept. He led the year-long project with reference to the epoch-making studies accomplished by Dr. Jerome Pearson. Since then, Dr. Ishikawa and his group have promoted research on space elevators, and the results have been published in acknowledged journals such as Acta Astronautica. Dr. Ishikawa is a member of the International Academy of Astronautics and has acted as the Co-Chair of the Technical Session D4.3 "Space Elevator" of the IAC for the last several years. He had been a member of the IAA's Study Group "SG3.24 Road to Space Elevator Era," and he served as one of the editors of the IAA Study Group final report "Road to Space Elevator Era," published in 2018. He is one of the leaders in the international space elevator community.
