Plenary 6: Space Industry Development & Support
Day: Thursday 19 May 2022
Time: 09:00 - 10:10
Recent developments in the global space sector demonstrate an increasing role played by the space industry and private sector institutions, including a plethora of new start-ups, referred to as new space. This underscores the need for a space industry as an important segment of the space value chain, especially where there is a move for space agencies to support space initiatives by the local industry. Traditionally agencies tend to focus on mitigating risks, whereas the industry is focused on driving down costs and pushing the boundaries for innovation. The Session focus will be on:
- Understanding the instruments used to develop, stimulate and grow the space industry within a space ecosystem.
- Appreciating how industry can self-organise to maximise on opportunities and deliver maximum impact along the space value chain.
- Understanding the agency-industry interface and how this relationship can be used to the benefit of national and regional priorities.
- Understanding the need for added measures to ensure the long-term sustainability of space to reinforce a culture geared towards the responsible use of outer space and its resources.
