From Ambition to Action: A Toolkit for Sustainable Space Ecosystem Development
Day: Wednesday 1 October
Time: 15:00 - 15:30 AEST Location: Parkside 2
This panel session delves into the essential components of building sustainable space ecosystems, with a particular focus on funding mechanisms, innovation frameworks, and private sector growth. As national space programmes continue to advance, the need for comprehensive, context-specific approaches to ecosystem development has become increasingly urgent. However, many emerging space nations face systemic challenges, including fragmented policy environments, limited access to financing, and underdeveloped innovation networks.
To address these challenges, the Research Institute for Innovation and Sustainability (RIIS), in partnership with the Kenya Space Agency (KSA) and with support from UK International Development through the Research and Innovation Systems in Africa (RISA) Fund, has developed the Space Ecosystem Development Toolkit. This pioneering resource helps countries assess their space ecosystems and design tailored interventions that drive inclusive and sustainable growth.
This This 30-minute panel session marks the global launch of the Toolkit and brings together experts from government and the private sector to share practical strategies for overcoming barriers to ecosystem development. Discussions will explore diverse investment models, the role of public-private partnerships, stakeholder collaboration, and regional cooperation, all key drivers for fostering private sector growth and sustainable innovation within the space sector. Drawing on lessons learned from the implementation of ecosystem approaches in Kenya and the broader African region, speakers will highlight how enabling policies and effective funding frameworks have been instrumental in cultivating thriving, resilient space industries.
