B1.1 (3) ESA’s Earth Observation Programmes: The International Perspective
Symposium: B1. IAF EARTH OBSERVATION SYMPOSIUM
Session: 1. International Ventures in Earth Observations
Day: Monday 5 October 2026

Room: Hall 4
As the global community confronts unprecedented environmental challenges, the European Space Agency (ESA) continues to strengthen its leadership in space-based monitoring through a dynamic and evolving Earth Observation (EO) portfolio. This presentation provides an overview of the current status and recent progress of ESA’s EO programmes.
ESA’s activities span scientific missions that advance understanding of the Earth system, operational programmes such as Copernicus developed with the European Union, and meteorological missions implemented in cooperation with EUMETSAT. These are complemented by emerging initiatives, including the development of Digital Twin Earth components and the DestinE programme, as well as an increasing focus on downstream applications and services, contributing to more resilient and secure EO capabilities.
Recognizing the complexity of Earth’s systems, ESA adopts a strongly collaborative approach with its Member States, combining bilateral partnerships with major spacefaring nations, and engages actively in key multilateral frameworks, including CEOS, GEO, WMO, and the United Nations system. The presentation also addresses ESA’s role in international development cooperation, including collaboration with international financial institutions, the European Commission (including DG INTPA), the African–European Earth Observation partnership, and mechanisms such as the International Charter “Space and Major Disasters,” among others.
By fostering data sharing, technical interoperability, and coordinated mission planning, ESA contributes to enhancing the global community’s capacity to monitor environmental change, strengthen resilience, and support the sustainable management of Earth’s resources. The presentation concludes with a forward-looking perspective on future EO developments in Europe and beyond.
