Moon Village Association - Latest Developments

Day: Wednesday 10 March 2021
Time: 14:00-15:00 CET

The Moon Village Association (MVA) has been created in 2017 as non-governmental organization (NGO) based in Vienna. The MVA fosters cooperation for existing or planned global moon exploration programs, be they public or private initiatives. It comprises approximately 200 members from more than 46 countries and 27 Institutional members around the globe, representing a diverse array of technical, scientific, cultural and interdisciplinary fields. MVA is member of IAF and Observer in the United Nations COPUOS.

The panel discussion will present some of the main Moon Village Association developments planned in 2021 such as:

(i) Progress on Moon Village Architecture studies, including a design reference case study focusing on lunar activities in 2045

(ii) Global Expert Group on Sustainable Lunar Activities (GEGSLA) , The current lack of coordination mechanisms for lunar activities presents a serious challenge to future missions and could lead to dangerous conflicts, especially in light of the increased global interest in specific areas like the lunar south pole. In view of the above, MVA proposed the creation of a neutral forum for multi-stakeholders discussions on lunar exploration and utilization: the Global Expert Group on Sustainable Lunar Activities (GEGSLA). GEGSLA is hosted by MVA, the kick-off took place on February 25, its composition and activities plan will be presented.

(iii) Participation of Space Emerging Countries Programme (PESC), In summer 2020, the MVA called for teams from emerging space countries around the world to participate in an activity to draft a roadmap for their country to engage them in the Moon Village concept. By the end of 2020, 9 countries submitted the roadmap. They were: Egypt, Kenya, Jordan, Kuwait, Nepal, Mongolia, Colombia, Chile, Mexico. The activity of drafting the roadmap can be seen as a capacity building activity because it was mentored by experts from the MVA. The status of the roadmaps will be presented.

(iv) Global Network, MVA is present in all the World since one of the important stakeholder of the Moon Village is the public. The status of the national/regional networks will be presented Indications on how to get involved in the MVA activities will be discussed. A short Q&A session is planned.
