Founded in 1919, Baku State University (BSU) is Azerbaijan’s oldest and largest higher education institution, located in Baku. It has 16 faculties, over 3,000 staff (more than half academic), and enrolls 25,000+ students across its main campus, regional branch, college, research institutes, and lyceum. BSU has a long tradition of educating prominent Azerbaijani intellectuals and leaders and focuses on academic excellence, innovation, sustainability, and internationalization.

BSU offers undergraduate to doctoral programs in diverse fields including sciences, humanities, law, economics, journalism, and international relations. It operates vocational and gifted student centers, scientific research institutes, and a Center of Excellence.

Internationally, BSU collaborates with over 120 universities worldwide, participates in exchange programs, and offers multiple double degree programs with leading global institutions. It hosts the UNESCO Chair on Human Rights and Information Law and the ICESCO Chair on Biomedical Materials, promoting interdisciplinary research and cooperation. BSU is a member of numerous prestigious networks such as EUA, EURAS, UNICA, and others, enhancing its global academic presence. Its campus hosts international cultural and educational centers including the Confucius Institute and King Sejong Institute.

In 2023, BSU received a five-year institutional accreditation from Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Science and Education and program accreditation in chemistry fields by IQAA. The university’s international rankings have improved significantly:
