Polish Academy of Sciences
Association and Professional Society • Member since 2012

The Polish Academy of Sciences is a national scientific institution conducting activities for the development, promotion and dissemination of science. The Academy is made up of a corporation of scholars and scientific institutes, and its organisational and administrative back-up is provided by the Chancellery of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
The members of the corporation of scholars of the Academy are three hundred and fifty outstanding researchers distinguished by their special achievements and authority. The members of the Academy are elected by the General Assembly of the Polish Academy of Sciences from among scholars who have distinguished themselves by their special scholarly achievements and authority and are of good repute. The Academy consists of national members and foreign members. Membership of PAN - as is the case with all national academies of science in Europe - is for life. Since 2010, the Academy of Young Scientists, which brings together talented scientists of the younger generation, has also been operating within the structures of PAN.
The second pillar of the Polish Academy of Sciences is its network of 68 scientific institutes, which employ over 9,000 staff. It is here that basic research is carried out, knowledge is created, inventions and patents that change our reality. The institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences are distinguished by the highest percentage of A+ and A categories in Poland, obtained within the framework of the evaluation of scientific activity conducted by the Ministry of Education and Science. What is more, their aggregated scientific output - if taken together - would allow them to take around the hundredth place in the Shanghai ranking, while the best Polish universities (with a much more numerous scientific staff) occupy around the 500th place. The Academy is also the Polish leader in the global Nature Index ranking. It takes into account, among other things, the number and value of articles published in renowned scientific journals. The Polish Academy of Sciences is also the highest ranked entity in the country included in the international SCImago ranking, which is created on the basis of scientists' achievements, the number of patent applications and cited works.
Within PAN there are also scientific committees (over 2000 democratically elected representatives of the entire scientific community), problem committees and advisory teams. Their role is to disseminate science and to provide the highest quality expertise for the needs of state authorities and for reliable public debate. Research stations, libraries, archives, museums, botanical gardens or conference centres are also an important part of PAN.
The Academy and the scientific institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences have their establishments not only in Poland, but also in several European capitals, in the Atacama Desert and even near both poles of the Earth.
The Chancellery of the Polish Academy of Sciences is the backbone for the efficient and politically independent functioning of this organism, and the Chancellor, who is elected by competition, is responsible, among other things, for managing the Academy's assets.
