University of Trento (UNITN) is a research-oriented University embedded in an autonomous territory supported by a high level of investment from the Province of Trento on the local Research & Innovation system. UNITN is top ranked among medium sized Italian Universities (1st on 2021/2022 Censis ranking, 1st for scientific output for the ANVURNQR rankings in 2016 and 2022 (covering the periods 2011-2014 and 2015-2019)), ranks in the 301-350 group of the 2021 World University Ranking by the Times Higher Education, and is the 440th (34% of the top universities worldwide) in QS World University Rankings 2022.

UNITN regularly hosts EU Marie Curie Chairs and Fellows and Erasmus Mundus Masters, and benefits from collaborations with world-class Research Institutions: UNITN includes 11 Departments and 3 Research Centers and from 2020 the School of Medicine and the Center for Medical Sciences. Since 2008, technology transfer produced a portfolio of 19 patents and 23 academic spin-off and start-up companies.

Space related activities are a tradition within UN ITN with collaborations with international (NASA, ESA, CNSA) and national agencies (ASI, INFN, INAF, INGV), with scientific and managing lead roles. UNITN researchers have a strong track record in the research areas related to space, with leading roles on space missions like: AMS on the ISS (ASI-NASA), LISA-PF (ESA), LISA .(ESA), CSES-1 (ASI-CNSA), CSES-2 (ASI-CNSA), JUICE(ESA). Since 2022 UNITN-Physics Department is coordinating the National PhD course in Space Science and Technology.
