In Memoriam: George James (1928-2024)

Visionary Founder of the Rocket Research Institute

The International Astronautical Federation (IAF) honours the memory of George James, the visionary founder of the Rocket Research Institute and a lifelong contributor to the global space science community, on the first anniversary of his passing, 11 September 2024. His passion for rocketry and education profoundly shaped both the scientific community and generations of young minds.

In 1943, at just 14 years of age, Mr James founded the Rocket Research Institute, a non-profit educational and consulting organisation. Remarkably, this institution predates the IAF itself and is regarded as one of the oldest continuously active amateur rocket groups in the world.

For more than 80 years, Mr James inspired and guided the international space community. His tireless service and extraordinary dedication to the mission of the IAF exemplified the vision and perseverance that continue to drive progress in astronautics today. This past spring George was also the recipient of the IAF Distinguished Service Award 2024.

As we honour George’s memory, we celebrate his remarkable legacy of innovation, education, and service. He is deeply missed by all who had the privilege of working alongside him.
