In Memoriam: Mr. Liu Jiyuan

Former Head of the China National Space Administration (CNSA)

Mr. Liu Jiyuan, recipient of the IAF Allan D. Emil Memorial Award (2003), key driving force for the first ever hosting of the International Astronautical Congress (47th, 1996) in Beijing, China, passed away on 17 August 2026 in Beijing at the age of 93. A pioneer of China’s space industry, Mr. Liu was an expert in China's launch vehicle technology and space systems engineering. He formerly served as President (Administrator) of China Aerospace Industry Corporation (China National Space Administration). The International Astronautical Federation learns with profound sorrow of the passing of this distinguished veteran of the global space community. The IAF extends its heartfelt condolences to Mr. Liu Jiyuan’s family. His valuable legacy for international space cooperation will be long remembered by space colleagues across the world.
