We make space computers with high processing performance for satellites and spacecraft. This is possible because we use commercial-off-the-shelf, terrestrial CPUs and GPUs, equipped with fault-tolerance and recovery mechanisms for mitigating Single Event Effects caused by radiation (bit upsets and potentially destructive latch-ups). Therefore, our space computers do not need to be “radiation-hardened” and are thus much more up-to-date and cost effective. At the same time, implementing components used in ground-based data centers makes it way easier to deploy the processing algorithms from the development environment (ground cloud) to the production environment (space edge).
Our computers are powerful enough to implement edge AI on-board satellites and to do data processing on orbit, which the next generation of spacecraft requires. There are lots of interesting applications that our space computers will enable. One example is processing earth observation data in real-time, such as weather events or defense targets. Another example is fully autonomous satellites. We have built our first space computers and tested them in a space-like environment, and will be flying our first ones next year.
Edge Aerospace is located in the United States and Luxembourg. It was established by former Made In Space and Redwire founders - Aaron Kemmer, Jaroslaw Jaworski, as well as Rafal Graczyk.
