Artemis II Mission Results: The Industry Perspective

The Artemis Accord nations will send astronauts on increasingly difficult missions to explore more of the Moon for scientific discovery, economic benefits, and to build upon our foundation for the first crewed missions to Mars. Artemis II was the first crewed flight under the Artemis campaign and the last test flight for Orion. The lessons we learn will directly prepare us to return humans to the surface of the Moon. Lockheed Martin designed and builds Orion for NASA, Airbus designed and builds Orion’s European Service Module (ESM) for ESA, and Thales Alenia Space Italy is a key subcontractor for Airbus. The Orion for Artemis II carried astronauts beyond the Moon for the first time in 53 years and broke the distance record set by the Apollo 13 mission in 1970.
The Lockheed Martin-built Orion is the only spacecraft ready now that is uniquely designed to take and keep humans safe in deep space. Artemis II had a full environmental control and life support system, the displays and controls, full fire suppression, a full toilet, food preparation, and exercise machine compared to Artemis I. This panel will discuss the quick-look results of the flight from the industry perspective. Tim, Wolfgang, and Maria will analyze the performance of the first-flight crew items, such as ECLSS, displays and controls, and crew systems. Howard Hu, the NASA Orion program manager, will moderate the discussion. They will also discuss the performance of the vehicle for the reused items on Artemis II, and the performance of systems that are part of the Orion reuse plan. The reuse of Orion crew modules and systems is key to the cost savings seen in the production contract.
