Andrew Du

SmartSAT CRC • AI Researcher

Andrew Du is an AI engineer and researcher with a PhD in Computer Science. He specializes in building efficient, high-performance models for real-world applications, particularly on edge platforms for Earth observation (EO). He has published in leading machine learning and remote sensing venues, with research and applied work focused on domain adaptation, model compression, and adversarial robustness - key areas for developing advanced and deployable AI systems in operational settings.

At SmartSat CRC, Andrew contributes to the Scarlet Lab program, where he leads R&D efforts to advance onboard AI capabilities for EO satellite missions. His current work focuses on adapting geospatial foundation models for onboard deployment, enabling a wide range of EO tasks including cloud filtering, natural disaster mapping (e.g., floods and landslides), land cover classification, and vegetation monitoring. He also supports the Kanyini cubesat mission, where he designs and evaluates AI applications to meet the compute and sensor constraints of onboard systems. His work enables reliable in-orbit performance and paves the way for future AI-powered EO missions.
