Richard finished his diploma in civil engineering in 1990 (TU Braunschweig). He has completed his PhD in 1996 at the Institute of Applied Mechanics (TU Braunschweig). Following this he worked in industry as structural engineer. Since 2000 Richard has been working at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) Institute of Lightweight Systems. Since 2008 he is professor for mechanics of composite structures at the University of Applied Sciences Göttingen (50%) in Stade and still 50% at DLR. Since 2019 he is also honorary professor for structural mechanics of composite materials at the University Bremen. In his current position at DLR he is senior scientist in the field of composite structures. He published 220 papers in reviewed journals and conference proceedings and contributed to 4 books.
