Myanmar's Space Technology Sector and Prospects for Sustainable Development

Today, various countries around the world are implementing space programs according to their respective technological fields to develop their national socio-economic lives by launching their own satellites. Within the Southeast Asian region, countries such as Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Singapore have already established their own satellites and dedicated space agencies. Establishing a space agency fosters national human resources in the field of space technology and creates new job opportunities for young professionals from aviation and aerospace universities, as well as technological universities within the country.

By owning a satellite, a nation can gain independent control over its spacecraft and take proactive measures for natural disaster management, both nationally and internationally. It will yield significant benefits for various organizations in Myanmar by providing necessary data for national security and military affairs, as well as facilitating international assistance.

Satellite imagery can greatly assist in increasing yields for the agricultural economy and environmental conservation. Approximately 50% of the country's population relies on rice farming for their livelihood. It is observed that citizens spend about 60% of their income on food, with 25% to 50% of that being based on rice, which is a primary staple. While Myanmar exports rice and other crops, its market expansion is still low compared to other countries. A key reason for this is the lack of comprehensive satellite data. The inability of farmers, exporters, and various departments to receive integrated, real-time information is a fundamental cause. Therefore, data derived from satellite imagery will be crucial for expanding into international markets.

Investing in space activities is a scientific and technological investment for national development, and as such, it reflects the value and performance of each individual. Although space-related developments are seen as long-term projects, in practice, the data obtained from satellites can not only be applied to the national economy but also be seen as an effective component for the management of the country's natural resources and energy assets. The data obtained from satellites can significantly support the development of national infrastructure, such as education and health sectors. Furthermore, data from a single satellite can provide substantial assistance for agriculture, defense, urban development, natural disaster prevention, and border security control.

To develop the advanced technological foundations of satellite technology, Myanmar can enhance its future socio-economic life from all perspectives by systematically implementing satellite service training, constructing ground control stations, nurturing human resources for the space technology field, and collaborating with international space agencies.
