National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)Group Lead in Chemical Propulsion, Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL)

Dr. Elizabeth Jens a Group Lead in Chemical Propulsion at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California. At JPL she has held a range of technical and leadership positions working on various flight chemical propulsion systems (with a focus on hybrid, monopropellant and cold gas systems). She is also active in technology development for chemical propulsion systems and has been the Principal Investigator on multiple successful technology efforts. She is the former group supervisor and technology domain lead for Chemical Propulsion at JPL. Prior to this she was the assistant Product Delivery Manager and analysis lead for the propulsion subsystem of the Sample Retrieval Lander, a proposed spacecraft that was designed to be the largest spacecraft landed on Mars to date. Elizabeth has conducted over 70 successful hybrid rocket hot fire tests and has conducted a variety of propulsion system trades for a range of space missions. Elizabeth co-authored the “Hybrid Rocket Propulsion Design Handbook” published in 2023 by Elsevier. She was recognized as a Global Australian Award Game Changer in 2022, a Vogue Game Changer in 2018 and as one of Australia’s Most Innovative Engineers of 2017 as Determined by Engineers Australia. She has twice been an Amelia Earhart Fellow, was a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar and the Australian Fulbright Scholar in Science and Engineering. Beth received a Ph.D. and Master’s Degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford University in 2016 and 2012, respectively. She received a Bachelor of Science in physics and a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from the University of Melbourne, Australia in 2008.
