Maro Alain Sieber

Marco Alain Sieber is a Swiss astronaut, physician and former Swiss Army paratrooper. Born in Switzerland in 1989, he graduated from Gymnasium Burgdorf in 2007 and subsequently joined the Swiss Army’s Special Forces Commando, where he trained as a paratrooper and attained the rank of Sergeant.

In 2015, Sieber received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Bern, where his doctoral research focused on robotic surgery. He subsequently specialised in emergency and rescue medicine and gained extensive clinical experience in surgery, traumatology, intensive care and anaesthesiology. He has also worked as a helicopter rescue emergency physician and served as Chief Medical Officer with Swisscoy, the Swiss Army contingent supporting KFOR in Kosovo.

Alongside his medical career, Sieber has been involved in aviation and parachuting, including as a skydiving instructor and private pilot. He enjoys a range of outdoor and adventure sports, including skydiving, paragliding, scuba diving, ski touring and kitesurfing. He speaks German, Swiss German, English and French.

Selected as an ESA astronaut candidate in November 2022, Sieber began his basic astronaut training in April 2023. He completed his training and received his astronaut certification from the European Space Agency’s European Astronaut Centre on 22 April 2024, making him eligible for future spaceflight assignments.
