CSIRO Space and AstronomySenior Principal Research Scientist, Frontier Mining Research Team Lead

Jonathon is a Senior Principal Research Engineer at CSIRO, where he drives research in automation and robotics to deliver safer, more sustainable resource extraction in extreme environments. He has been with CSIRO for almost 30 years, contributing across multiple roles to the advancement of automation in mining and beyond.

During this time, Jonathon has driven industry-wide adoption of automation through roadmap development and engagement with global leaders, and he has directly led advances that improved the safety and sustainability of mining. He also leads CSIRO's space resources activities as the Capability Lead for In-Situ Resource Utilisation (ISRU), supporting Australia and international efforts in the emerging space resources sector. As lead of CSIRO’s Frontier Mining Research Team, he is driving the development of autonomous and sustainable technologies aimed at zero-entry, closed-loop mining, drawing inspiration through cross-domain innovation. A Senior Member of the IEEE, he contributes to international collaboration through the ISECG ISRU Technology Working Group and the IMEWG.
