Richard Harvey is Chief Operating Officer of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Plants for Space, an Australian-led international research consortium, that is reimaging plant design and bioresource production to support human habitation in deep space and remote and extreme environments on Earth. Following completion of his PhD in 2010 at the University of Adelaide, Richard worked as a postdoctoral research fellow in medical research, understanding the molecular mechanisms responsible for pneumonia, bacteraemia, meningitis and otitis media caused by the bacterial pathogen Streptococcus pneumoniae. Later Richard made the transition from research to politics where he was elected to the Parliament of South Australia as the Member for Newland and served as Government Whip in the House of Assembly. In the Parliament Richard was a vocal advocate for the importance of research and innovation as key drivers of economic growth and opportunity, and was co-chair of the South Australian Science Meets Parliament. Post politics, Richard joined the Australian Institute for Machine Learning, in policy and engagement roles and ultimately as Program Manager of the $20 million Centre for Augmented Reasoning.
