Sascha Flögel

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel • Senior Scientist

Dr. Sascha Flögel is an experienced marine scientist at GEOMAR working primarily on modern cold-water corals and their underlying physical- and biogeochemical boundary conditions. The focus of his current work is dedicated towards (autonomous) longterm monitoring systems such as landers and submarine crawlers to investigate environmental boundary conditions and their influence on various benthic habitats. He has previously worked on the analysis of large datasets using PCA algorithms and machine learning approaches to investigate causal relationships of ambient seawater masses and their habitats. Simultaneously, he’s currently leading a team of engineers and scientists that develop submarine technology that works on lander systems, submarine crawlers and submarine fuel cells for deep-sea monitoring.

Originally he started as a geochemist working on Cretaceous sediments during phases of global bottom water anoxia. Subsequently, he used General Circulation Models of the atmosphere and ocean to further investigate these times of extreme global warmth on geological time scales.
