Tor Blomqvist

Deep Space Food Consortium • Head, Food Systems Architecture, Programs & Policy

Tor Blomqvist is an agronomist and food scientist at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), where he researches planetary food systems for the Moon and Mars. His work focuses on habitat-level food-system requirements, functional dependencies and reliability under uncertain mission conditions. Taking a systems perspective, he examines how production connects with post-harvest handling, storage, processing, preparation, verification and resource recovery, and how food security requirements can be translated into design requirements, evaluation metrics and readiness evidence. Drawing on his earlier career as a chef, Tor brings a deep appreciation for the cultural, emotional and social importance of food. He focuses on implementation strategies as missions evolve, including how technologies are phased into mission architectures and the role of ground-test facilities in reducing risk. Tor also served as a judge for the Deep Space Food Challenge, contributing food systems and safety expertise to the evaluation of competing technologies.
